Sexy* Black Girl Bunny?
*Introducing the more nuanced politics and art in Hulu's new show CLIPPED
Hi there. I’ve missed this and you. It’s been a minute here as we’ve been developing the Process With Alex Beightol podcast and looking to integrate the forms of media used for our culture discussions. But essays and a future show here, together on Substack? Where we have no time limits? Let’s get back to it with Hulu’s new show CLIPPED, and specifically, Cleopatra Coleman’s performance of the woman who razed NBA owner, attorney, and billionaire Donald Sterling to the ground.
V. Stiviano has been reduced down to this Sexy Black Bunny Rabbit whose ditz and betrayal made her a meme and something of a villain. But who is V? What did she want and did she ultimately get it and get maligned for chasing the unadulterated American Dream? We’ll be watching each episode and looking at the fashion, the politics, and the business that made this American scandal explode and how the TV show presents this story. We’ll also look at Cleopatra Coleman’s artistic choices and what she brings as a multi-ethnic black woman to the complicated and whole woman that V. Stiviano was and is.
This Sunday, I’ll kick off this dissection and introduce the real life story over on the podcast. Check back in next Friday for our first essay on this show. The essay will be available as an audio listen as well.
Thanks for being here,
Alex
