We've Got This
A new show from yours truly, the team behind This American Life, and the SPLC.
One of the best feelings in the world?
Looking around someone’s living room and realizing that you love the group sitting on the floor, cutting the cake, and moving dirty dishes out of the way for the people who just now busted through the door.
That realization, of just how precious your community is, is why we muddle through when someone breaks the nice pitcher and gets red juice on the carpet. Being a “We” is worth the maintenance and mess.
There are a few people who want you to believe that isn’t true. We are seeing them now, slashing through programs we voted on for each other, making up unsustained claims about “waste” and “bloat”, and encouraging us to turn on each other.
There are more people who want you to believe in that first thing you knew, that you are fortunate to live here in this moment in time with these people. For every systemic failure in America, there has always been a group of people working away to make this place safe, just, and free for everyone.
Every month I will get to bring home conversations, encouragement, and education from those people. They are from all over the South and their work impacts everyone everywhere. In collaboration with PRX and The Southern Poverty Law Center, this is APATHY IS NOT AN OPTION, a new podcast and show on Apple and Spotify.
Many thanks to everyone at the SPLC, PRX, and the members of our communities in the South who brought their stories, ideas, and resilient hope to these conversations about what we are going to do about this place we call home and how we are going to continue to fight for each other.
Be sure to follow the show, @thesplcenter on social media, and leave us your thoughts after you give it a listen. Many thanks to you, dear reader, and hopefully a new listener! We’ve got this.
This is an impressive undertaking. I can't wait to queue Episode 1! Storytelling and celebrating community connections are vital. ✊
