What To Expect While We're Expecting (Creatively)
Alternatively titled, I Am Terrible At Updates
Dear treasured readers,
Hello again! I hope the wind-down of your summer is peaceful, and if not peaceful, productive and not too maddening. You have heard crickets from this publication and no faith-related articles because of my maddening, fascinating summer of prep. I will try to be better at updating you all more frequently, however! It is going to stay quiet around here until mid-September.
We’re going back to school this fall, and in preparation, I have been expanding the team here at A Land Re-Membered, casting and prepping for production, and researching at a fast clip. Flying through books from Carol Anderson, Rachel Louise Synder's masterpiece on particular American violence that affects us all, and various papers written by graduate students and professors of law across this beautiful country.
I know it’s easy to find ourselves overwhelmed by what feels like a bunch of American fires burning at once, but if I have learned anything from my readings this summer, is that there are so many everyday Americans (our neighbors!) who witness fires of any size and put them out in their own ways. I’ve been introduced to women who identify and shelter at-risk women, students who spend hours listening to hurting families and use their newfound legal understanding to articulate a better path forward, and elders who dig deep into their experiences to tell a truth about our history that could set us free. We have more than enough to make this place a safe and just home for everyone. I feel so fortunate to have the time and space to learn about this and share what I can with you. You, and your witness of any of this, are so deeply appreciated.
I can’t wait to introduce you to the people who are going to bring some of Florida’s best poems and essays to life, the ordinary people on the front lines of gun safety and racial equality, and the resources that connect you and your kids to the context and story that has made us here.
Thank you again, and see you soon!
